These are my favorite Practical Magic party ideas for celebrating together.. The sisterhood, the magic, the midnight rituals (and margaritas!!) and the brooms.
If you’ve been looking for an excuse to throw a genuinely unforgettable Halloween girls night — or a Practical Magic inspired party to watch the new release, that goes far beyond the usual movie night setup — this is it. I hosted a full witch party for my coven, complete with potion bar and broomstick making and it is the most magical evening I have ever put together. I made sure every space had its own magical atmosphere and every guest left with a gorgeous piece of Halloween decor she made herself.

Practical Magic Party Ideas: Setting the Scene
First, let me set the scene for these Practical Magic party ideas. If you’ve seen Practical Magic — or you’re counting down to the sequel like I am — you know the real magic was never the spells. It’s the women. The Owens sisters, the aunts, the whole coven gathered around a fire, making something with their hands, showing up for each other.
That’s the energy I built this party around. Not a Halloween costume party. Not a generic witchy aesthetic. A real coven gathering, where every detail — the food, the drinks, the activity — felt intentional and specific to my witchy friends and an Owens sisters’ revival! Midnight margaritas in a cauldron, anyone?
And the broom making? That felt like the most Owens-sisters thing we could possibly do. It’s practical, it’s creative, it’s completely individual, and it’s genuinely satisfying to watch come together. Every witch needs her own broom, so every guest at this party made hers from scratch. Every place setting also had its own spell book and pen waiting, so guests could write down their own intentions before the night was through.
Setup 1 – The Broom Making Station
The heart of this party and the part that makes it completely unique is the broom making station. One of my favorite Practical Magic party ideas! This is what separates a witch party from any other Halloween gathering — a hands-on craft activity where every guest makes her own broom from scratch, decorated with florals, feathers, ribbons, dried grasses and anything else that feels right.
Setting Up the Broom Making Table
First, set your table with a witch-themed tablecloth — I used a witch hat print tablecloth which not only immediately sets the tone but helps with clean up. Just wrap up any mess left on the table in the tablecloth and throw out. Next, I added some base broomsticks for my fellow witches! I used a selection of brooms that already had bristles, a variety of plastic and bamboo/wood handles. You can also forage your local park or woods for sticks and branches of a good length and diameter to use as a base instead.
Then I added some cardstock wall decor as table accents, my favorite was the Salem Spells and Potions sign These made each supply area on the table a focal point. To hold the supplies I used a set of nesting cauldrons that come in varying sizes in addition to some clear acrylic trays for smaller decor items.
The cauldrons held themed ribbons, lace and fabric strips, raffia, dried fruits and botanicals and craft tools such as scissors, wire and pliers.
Additionally a three-tier black cart held birch twigs for fleshing out brooms, dried grasses, feathers, faux floral stems and a selection of colored moss.
The Backdrop
Behind the broom making table, I hung a dramatic backdrop of witches dancing around a fire backdrop — It doubles as a great photospot, its almost like we are dancing with them! I also added hanging witch hat decorations mounted from the ceiling with fishing wire, these were my guests favorite decor item! Then a couple of jointed witch silhouettes for good measure, I love the nostalgic, throwback feel of these. The 3-d effect is a craft station that feels like it exists inside the world of the witches, rather than just near a pretty backdrop.
List of Broom Making Supplies
This list is not exhaustive and you can add to fit your preferances, a theme or color scheme.

- A base broom — with a natural bristle broom base or alternatively use a foraged stick
- Extra broom bristles like birch twigs or forage in local parks and forests for small stems, twigs and branches
- Dried grasses, dried floral stems, or faux florals in autumn tones or bold blacks and Halloween colors
- Textured twine, rope, jute, leather strips, raffia,or cheesecloth for binding
- Feathers and floral picks
- Moss
- Ribbon, lace, tulle and fabric strips in Halloween colors
- Fairy lights
- Small embellishments — jewels, spiders, butterflies, moths, charms, beads, dried fruit, spell vials, berries, crystals, pendants (moons or pentacles would be perfect), mini signs, rolled up “spell” pages, dried herbs, eyeballs, or mice
- Tools – Scissors, hot glue gun & glue sticks, floral wire, floral tape, fishing wire and zip tie
The broomstick results are extraordinary every time! Every guest is working from the same supply palette but making completely individual choices, the finished brooms are all completely unique. At the end of the activity each guest has a handmade witch broom that is genuinely hers — not a craft kit output, but something she designed and built herself and can display at home.

Setup 2 — The Potion Bar
Every witch party needs a potion bar! This is where the drinks live and where the atmosphere of the party shifts from craft session to full on coven celebration.
I built the potion bar around this cool cauldron drink dispenser — a large black cauldron that dispenses drinks from a tap at the base. It is one of the most unexpected and on theme pieces in the whole party setup and every guest went straight for it when they arrived.
Styling the Potion Bar
I used a gold bar cart dressed with a black foliage garland and the cauldron dispenser as the centrepiece on the top tier.
Then I added potion bottles filled with colored liquids, and the cutest Halloween cocktail set. It comes with glasses, drink stirrers in broomstick shapes, coasters and bat drink markers that slip on the edge of the cocktail glasses.
The bar cart was flanked with a life-size witch animatronic witch holding a poison apple. And on the other side a pair of skeletons that carry a coffin. This is designed to hold ice and drinks. For this get-together I filled it with a couple of boxes and covered it with black velvet fabric. It made a great appetizer display. I just placed silver trays of nibbles on top for the perfect spooky eats!
Above the bar I hung a Broom Vroom apothecary sign which added a moment of warmth and humor to an otherwise dramatic setup.
The Midnight Margaritas Connection
For the drinks — if you’e hosting a Practical Magic watch party or a film-inspired gathering, midnight margaritas are non-negotiable! Do you think they’ll make a return in the sequel? Serve them from the cauldron dispenser and the whole ritual of filling your glass from a cauldron feels genuinely magical.
Setup 3 — The Witch Table Setting
Once everyone has a drink in hand, they need somewhere just as bewitching to sit. This might be the most spellbinding Halloween tablescape I’ve ever put together.
The Table
I set my round wooden table with a black lace bat tablecloth as a runner with sage green linen runners as accent. Create movement in these by bunching in certain places rather than laying flat. The combination of the lace and green creates a layered, textured look that feels organic and slightly witchy without being heavy or dark.
The Place Settings
I built each place setting the way I’d build a good spell — layer by layer, starting from the base ingrediants up!
- Black scalloped charger as the base
- Orange charger plate underneath for color contrast
- Witch plate
- Witchy napkin & black cutlery
- Black cauldron mug
- Black glassware (and I found these adorable broomstick glasses as an alternative!)
- Witch notebooks (aren’t the charms on these adorable!) with a pen for writing spells
- A Witchy bracelet with stars and moons — these come in a set of 10 so make an affordable favor gift for your witches to wear
Of course you can’t forget the sage for casting out evil spirits and a witch hat placed for each guest to wear throughout the evening. I picked a different hat for each guest, they were decorated with everything from black roses, eyeballs, skull details and ribbons before the party which meant every guest arrived to find her own unique witch hat waiting.
The Centerpiece
The centrepiece started with stacked spell books — Charms Psychic Tarot and Palmistry — then I added a wicker witches hat on top. Next to this I added a witch silhouette centrepiece, I love how it shows your coven dancing around their salt circle!
I also added candlesticks and a mini black cauldron filled with matches as well as a light-up wire spider in the center of the table for some dreamy fairy lighting. Finally I added sprigs of dried botanicals, pumpkins, autumn leaves and dried flowers along the runner and between the centrepiece elements for an organic, gathered-from-the-spell ingrediant garden feeling.
Setup 4 — The Dessert Bar
Finally, every coven gathering needs its own dessert spread. The hero pieces for this dessert bar were two food display stands — a tiered cupcake stand with a witch cutout and a cauldron-shaped stand — both made for Halloween entertaining, witch stlye!
The Dessert Display
I used the kitchen island as my dessert bar surface and dressed it with a black, orange and gold tinsel fringe curtain to hide the kitchen behind it – the metallic fringe reflects the light beautifully and adds glamour too!
Here’s what went into building this spread:
- A witch cupcake tower. A tiered stand with a witch cutout at the top, filled with red velvet cupcakes and cream frosting. This stand set comes with the cutest cupcake toppers .
- The cauldron food stand — filled with lemon cookie sanwiches and vanilla cupcakes
- Lots of atmospheric details. I used a crystal ball, spell book, globe eyes, diorama pieces and a witch hat. These are all there to create depth at the edges of the spread
- Witch plates and napkins stacked beside the food stands, ready for eating!
- I also added dripping candles to the display, which brings in a slightly gothic vibe. I love the melting-wax details without the mess
Practical Magic Party Ideas: Tips for Hosting
Party Set-Up
Set the scene before anyone arrives. The atmosphere is everything, and it’s one of the simplest Practical Magic party ideas to steal.Light candles, put on music, and turn on the light-up elements before your first guest arrives. Walking into a fully dressed space is the difference between a party and an experience.
Make the broom making the anchor activity not an afterthought. Build the schedule around broom making. Drinks and nibbles first, then broom making as the main event. Finish with dinner at the witch table with finished brooms displayed behind you. The brooms become the centrepiece of the dinner table and conversation naturally. Don’t forget to have some fun with photos of the finished brooms. I added a cauldron that bubbled and lit up for each witch to pose in front of with her broom!
Personal Details
Pre-select the witch hats. This takes a little thought but it’s worth it. A personalized hat at each place setting is the single detail that makes guests feel seen and celebrated rather than like attendees at a generic party. You can even decorate a plain hat yourself for the extra special handmade touch.
A personal connection. I used bracelets at each place setting, but it could be any small element that connects each witch to her coven — putting these on became a small ritual of its own and made the start of the evening felt like the party’s opening ceremony.
Choose drinks that feel witchy. Midnight margaritas are the obvious choice for a Practical Magic inspired evening. Additionally any dark-colored cocktail — blackberry gin, black elderflower spritz, blueberry mojito — served from the cauldron dispenser becomes a potion by virtue of its vessel.
Let the activity be open-ended. The broom making works best when there are no instructions and no right answers. Set out the supplies, show a few finished examples and then step back. Furthermore giving guests creative freedom is what produces the most beautiful results and the most joyful experience.
Sharing More
Writing spells. There is something genuinely powerful about a group of women sitting together writing their intentions, their hopes, their wishes — even if you call them spells rather than journal entries. It’s the most Practical Magic thing you can do at a party and it costs almost nothing to facilitate.

The broom making activity works for any group size although I’d recommend a maximum of eight inside — enough for a full coven feeling without losing the intimacy. For a larger group, set up outside! or set up additional broom making stations and increase supply quantities accordingly. Furthermore the activity itself scales easily — you simply need more base brooms and more supplies.
What food and drinks do you serve at a witch party?
Midnight margaritas — served from a cauldron drink dispenser — are the signature drink for any Practical Magic inspired gathering. For food, red velvet cupcakes with white frosting on a tiered witch cupcake stand. Decorate cupcakes with cupcake picks or edible flowers. Dark-toned finger foods all suit the aesthetic. Additionally fall feeling food like black grapes, pomegranate seeds adn dark chocolate. Anything served in or around cauldron vessels feels instantly on theme!
