Howdy! How many of y’all have horse-lovers in the family? I reckon I’m not the only one, so I decided to style a Rustic Horse-Themed Birthday Party with plenty of ideas and inspiration for you to host your own! Read on to see how I set it all up!
DIY Decor
The first thing I did was create a show-stopping chandelier out of cowgirl hats! This easy DIY project really set the scene for the entire party. You can get details for how to create it HERE.
Tip: Use removable hooks to create this look at home, tie from a tree if you are outdoors or from a rafter at a barn.
Table Setting & DIY Personalized Picnic Baskets
Next, I set the table under the chandelier. I covered it with a horseshoe tablecloth, and created a centerpiece using a faux floral wreath, a horseshoe cutout and a horse figurine. For additional decor, I also added a few votive holders and some more horse figurines to the center of each end of the table.
Tip: If you have a horse lover at home like I do you may have access to horse toys and models. My daughter can’t get enough of Schleich Horse toys and Breyer Horse Models. These make great table decor. Add little florals to their ears or create a mini winners wreath for them to wear.
My place settings were set on white doily placemats. Each person received a Personalized Picnic Basket with everything they needed for eating, plus some extra treats. You can get details for how to make them HERE.
Tip: The great thing about these baskets is their versatility. Use them for outdoor seating or even an “at the barn” lunch. The kids can carry them to the perfect spot. They also double as a fun take home basket.
I also provided cute horse cookies from Trophy Baking on doilies next to each picnic basket, and a pretty pink boot mug for drinks.
Food and Drinks
Behind my dessert table, I set up a backdrop using a frame, a sheer pink shower curtain, a horse garland, and a couple more cowgirl hats. Next to it, I placed a large white horse cardboard standup. Perfect for photos!
Tip: Use lengths of rope as a lasso style party prop. The girls loved taking photos with these and pretending they were at a real life rodeo.
The dessert table was covered with pink and white lace tablecloths, and I used a variety of galvanized metal stands to display snacks and desserts, for a truly rustic feel. I added a few more horse decorations and votives, as well as some faux florals in a vintage watering can and a trophy, to really bring the theme home in this area.
The cake was the star of this horse show, with a DIY Horse and Bunting Cake Topper. You can get details for how to create it HERE.
On the other side of the dessert table, I set up my drink station. I placed beverage dispensers decorated with faux florals on a farm stand I labeled the “Watering Hole”. Bandanas, coiled rope, and more horse and floral decorations added the perfect cowgirl feel. I also set out a tray of additional boot mugs. Plenty to go around!
Games and Favors
To keep everyone entertained, I set up a “Pin the Tail on the Hose” game area, with a paper backdrop that looks like a weathered wood barn wall.
Next to this area, I set up my favor table with a pre-made hay bale backdrop. I used white shelving and small decorative hay bales to display a variety of fun favors. Doilies, pink bandanas, faux florals and a final horse figurine completed the look.

I absolutely loved the creativity and uniqueness of these party ideas! The rustic horse theme is perfect for a little one’s special day. I especially like the idea of using hay bales and M&M’s for decoration. It’s already making me think of party planning ideas for my own niece’s upcoming birthday. Thank you for sharing such inspiring ideas!
