How to Set up an Amazing Magic-Themed Birthday Party
DIY Magical Masking Tape Backdrop
First, the show-stopping backdrop. If you have followed me for a while, you know that creating easy DIY masking tape backdrops are kind of my thing. So I grabbed some black and pink masking tape and got to work making a giant magician’s hat that matched the ones in the tableware on my blank wall. For the stars & moon I used my Cricut to cut them out of gold glitter vinyl. The Cricut library has these shapes as standard images.
I then used decks of gold and black cards to create the illusion of cards flying out of the hat. The unique colors of these decks added a bit of elegance to this magical party.
Finally, coming out of either side of the hat, I added some linked golden hoops to represent the ones magicians use in their hoop tricks, and in the plates.

Desserts
On either side of the backdrop, I set out a small side table covered in gold sequin and golden star table cloths. These served as my dessert tables, and each held a pink or blue cake stand with delicious cupcakes displayed on them. As an easy way to add a little magic into my desserts, I used clean playing cards as cupcake toppers. I also included a few magician’s props to the bases of the cake stands.
Table Setting
For my dining table centerpiece, I used an actual magician’s top hat wrapped with a coral ribbon (to match the plates) and filled with magician’s props. A faux bouquet, magician’s white gloves, magic wands and playing cards sat in a bed of metallic gold shred. The whole thing was propped up on a magic puzzle box for extra height.
I also added a “Hooray” acrylic cutout to bring a bit of the birthday celebration vibe to the table. The color matched my faux floral bouquet and hat ribbon perfectly.
Then, on either side of the table, I added more magician’s props. A magic 8 ball, and an adorable white rabbit who must have hopped out of the hat before I filled it up.
Place Settings
The stars of my place settings were the Magician’s dinner plates. To each side of the plates, I added a Magic Bunny in a Hat plate for desserts.
Then, I added matching paper cups and transparent blue plastic utensils to each place.
The cups included paper straws and adorable mustache drink stirrer to match the plates.
Each place also received a cool napkin in the shape of a playing card.
Finally, I added a playing card and personalized magic wand place card to each seat. Add a strip of gold washi tape around each end then the wands are easily personalized with either letter stickers, or by using adhesive vinyl and a cricut.
Style with dice and place the wands on playing cards so the names really pop!
Let the magic begin by passing me a cupcake!
