There are some years that we want to throw big and energetic parties for various holidays. This year, things have been a bit crazy all around and a more relaxed and small family celebration feels more appropriate. But that doesn’t mean boring! I decided to deck out our front porch in red, white, and blue glory to make the perfect relaxing spot to hang out and enjoy the warm summer sun with some lemonade for our neighbors while we wait for fireworks in the evening. Read on to find out how I did it!

How to Create a Pretty Patriotic Porch for 4th of July

Star-Spangled Backdrop

First, I set the scene with a dramatic backdrop of balloons and banners. I created a garland of sectioned red, white and blue balloons in a mixture of plain and star-spangled styles. I draped this garland over the doorway, and trailed the ends down organically into the existing greenery on either side of the porch.

Then, I hung a long American flag banner right under the balloon garland on each side to frame the porch.

Patriotic Stand

In the center of the porch, I set up a stand on a starry blue yard blanket. Then, I used an array of 4th of July themed paper fans to decorate the top of the stand. The front of the stand featured a patriotic cloth USA bunting. Next, I placed a drink dispenser of ice-cold lemonade on the stand, that I decorated with red and blue washi tape and a pinwheel. In front of it, I set out some metallic Independence Day cups and red and white striped napkins.

All American Activities

This porch isn’t just for show! I wanted to make it a fun and relaxing spot to for my family to hang out and for neighbors to stop by and enjoy a lemonade. That’s why I set up a couple of chairs around the stand with patriotic pillows for comfort. While my husband and I sat and sipped lemonade, the kids played with the pinwheels and handed out 4th of July-themed tattoos to kids going by. I placed these in cute red starry pails on the stand.

Red, White, and Blue Walkway

Finally, I created a red, white, and blue walkway to lead family and friends up to my patriotic porch. I stuck 4th of July pinwheels all along the hedges leading up to the front porch. This not only visually enhanced the pathway, but added some fun movement to the scene as well when the breeze blew.
