The birthday cake is arguably one of the most important parts of any birthday celebration. So why not plan a whole party around a cake theme? Whether it’s for a child’s milestone or an adult’s special day, a cake-themed birthday party promises an explosion of colors and sweet delights that everyone will enjoy. I found an array of amazing cake-themed decorations from Oriental Trading Co., and used them to create a festive and colorful cake-themed celebration. Read on for all the sugary details!
How to Set up a Colorful Cake-Themed Birthday Party
Cake Table
The first thing I set up for this party was the dessert table, which in this case was covered by – you guessed it – CAKES! A cake-themed birthday party definitely deserves more than one. I set this up on a table with a candle and confetti tablecover. Behind the table, I hung a colorful fringe backdrop with a “Let’s Eat Cake” garland embellishment.
I also used a “Hooray” topper, curly candles, and other colorful decorations on some of the cakes for extra doses of festive.
In addition to cakes of different shapes, sizes, and colors, I added a cake-themed stand full of colorful cupcakes.
I also used a matching cake-themed “Happy Birthday” cardboard stand to add even more color and sweet fun to the dessert table.
Table Setting
Next, I set the table! First, I spread colorful confetti down the center of the table. For a centerpiece, I used a clear acrylic holder with painted faux candles in it.
I also included a few paper fan cakes on either side of the centerpiece.
For place settings, I layered pink-checkered plates with cake-themed plates on top of a pink grid placemat. Then, I added an “eat cake” napkin, candle cup, and cake favor box of plastic utensils wrapped in another cake-themed napkin.
I used adorable mini-cake piñatas on cupcake stands for place cards.
Each place setting also included a “Happy Birthday” headband and a confetti popper.
Finally, I added another cupcake holder to each place setting with a mini-cake in it for our cake-decorating activity (more on that next!).
Cake Decorating Activity
Keeping guests entertained is an important part of any party. In this case, deciding on the entertaining activity was easy – cake decorating! I set up a rolling cart with cake-themed bags full of cake-decorating supplies for each of the guests, along with extra sprinkles and frosting tips.
I also had the cutest little cake-themed ring toss game for guests to play.
Photo Booth
After the cake decorating, guests will want to take photos to show off their creations! I set up a giant “Eat Cake” photo booth backdrop using large silver balloon letters embellished with colorful confetti stickers and wacky balloons to better match the vibe of the cake-themed birthday party.
I also added some colorful props for guests to hold.
